In Spanish class we’ve learned a lot of things about Spanish-speaking countries and their cultures. My favorite thing that we’ve learned was La Quema del Diablo, or The Burning of the Devil.

It’s a Christmas tradition in Guatemala where an effigy of the devil is burnt as a form of cleansing evil. It began in 16th century Guatemala with a functional purpose; before electric lights were invented, bonfires were used to light the streets in Guatemala during the Christmas season. Eventually the meaning of these bonfires came to be spiritual cleansing and the burning of the devil began. This tradition is my favorite we’ve learned because I think it has an interesting history and burning an effigy of the devil is awesome.

In Spanish class we used a lot of methods to learn Spanish, but three were my favorite.

First, I liked the trabajo de timbres because a fun fact at the beginning of class everyday is a nice addition and broadens my understanding of the Spanish-speaking world in certain aspects. Next I think that the eggspert game helped a lot because I had to think of the answer quickly to win, which meant I had to get good at knowing words without thinking or translating them in my mind.

Finally, I liked the Gimkits we did because the trivia about whatever we were doing at the time was further drilled into my mind, and the fun games made me want to study in my free time.
